Application Process

 

Temporary License (Authorization to Practice Letters – ATP) –

1. Submit a completed application for Licensure by Endorsement online

2. Pay the associated fees Wait 10 business days from the date your application was received by the Virginia Board of Nursing.

3. Submit an email request to the Virginia Board of Nursing

• Include your Nursys license verification receipt and/or your current license (only for non-Nursys participating states)

• Fieldprint (fingerprinting) appointment confirmation receipt

 

Permanent License

1. Submit a completed application for Licensure by Endorsement online

2. Pay the associated fees

3. Complete fingerprint-based criminal background check

• Done exclusively through Fieldprint Va.

• The fingerprints will be done electronically through LiveScan.

• You can have your fingerprints done either in-state or out-of-state.

• The Virginia Board of Nursing will have your results within 24-48 hours (results for applicants outside of Virginia will require additional processing time due to manual processing and mailing times).

4. Verification from your original state of licensure

• If the state participates in Nursys, you must complete the Nursys verification process, pay their fee and designate Virginia as the receipt of the verification.

• If the state does not participate in Nursys, you must contact their state Boards directly for further instructions. You will need to send them the top portion of the Verification of Licensure form to complete and then they will submit it directly to the Virginia Board of Nursing on your behalf.

5. Submit the Clinical Hours form completed by your nursing employer (if applicable) • Required only if you graduated from a nursing program with less than 500 clinical hours (RN) or 400 clinical hours (LPN).

• Must include evidence of 960 hours of clinical practice and an active unencumbered license in another US jurisdiction. 6. Submit credential evaluation by CGFNS (if applicable)

• Licensure applicants previously licensed in another U.S. jurisdiction but educated in a foreign country (except Canada) must provide their identification/certificate number issued by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS).

7. Submit name change documents (if applicable)

 

Renewal License

• Renewal of your license occurs every 2 years

• 15 required contact hours and 640 practice hours OR 30 contact hours
