Cardiac Operating Room Surgical Technologist

Job Description

The Adult Cardiac Operating Room (OR) caters to a diverse range of patients, including those undergoing CABG, TAVI, heart failure treatments such as VADs, ECMO, artificial hearts, and heart transplants. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, the OR staff provides exceptional care to patients across all age groups. The Surgical Technologist will be responsible for offering technical knowledge in preparing instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures and will assist the surgical team from the scrub position during operations. Duties include ensuring the proper care and handling of instruments, facilitating room turnover between cases, maintaining sterile technique, and adhering to hospital policies regarding the safe handling of sharps and surgical counts. The Surgical Technologist will also demonstrate proper handling of solutions and pharmacologic agents under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Responsibilities

• Prepare instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures.
• Assist the surgical team from the scrub position during operations.
• Maintain sterile techniques and perform surgical counts as per hospital policy.
• Facilitate turnover of the operating room between surgical cases.
• Handle pharmacologic agents under the direction of a registered nurse.

Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure

• Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or 10 years of experience as a Surgical Technician.
• Two (2) years of recent experience in a cardiac operating room.
• Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
• Ability to scrub and circulate during surgical procedures.
• Operating room experience in a Level 1 trauma facility is preferred.

Schedule

This position requires a shift of 3x12 hours, including DEN rotation, availability for weekends, holidays, and on-call duties as needed per unit requirements.
