Job Description
The Medical Laboratory Scientist will perform all routine and complicated laboratory procedures, including specimen processing, specimen handling, and testing of patient specimens, as well as calculating and reporting results. This role requires the operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments, performance of quality control procedures, and participation in the development of new procedures and protocols. Additional responsibilities may include phlebotomy and other patient-oriented tasks.
Responsibilities
- Perform all routine and complicated laboratory procedures related to specified age or sex values.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation, making minor repairs or notifying appropriate personnel as needed.
- Cross-train to other laboratory sections as necessary.
- Ensure compliance with the laboratory's quality control program.
- Calculate, enter, and verify results of laboratory procedures.
- Utilize the Laboratory Information System for documentation and notification of critical lab values.
- Process patient specimens, paying attention to pediatric specimen volume requirements.
- Participate in evaluating, developing, and implementing new or updated testing procedures and protocols.
- Adapt patient assessment and care methods to meet the unique needs of diverse populations.
- Complete all required compliance and regulatory tasks, following applicable policies and procedures.
- Perform additional duties as requested.
Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in a relevant scientific field from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training.
- Certification for MT, MLS, CLS, or MLT from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS. Certification must be maintained and kept current.
- New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (with certification completion required within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
- No experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program; one year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
