Job Description

The Surgical Technologist functions in the role of scrub person, working under the supervision of the surgeon and the Registered Nurse (R.N.) to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and that operative procedures are conducted in conditions that maximize patient safety. The individual must possess expertise in the theory and application of surgical techniques, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the implementation of tools and technologies to facilitate safe care during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Responsibilities

• Ensure completion of case carts according to preference cards and effectively interpret these cards for procuring instruments and supplies.
• Communicate clearly with operating room staff and sterile processing staff members to coordinate instrumentation for scheduled and non-scheduled cases.
• Review daily schedule with the charge nurse and day coordinator of sterile processing to identify possible turnover delays and scheduling issues.
• Assume responsibility for core communications and delegate duties accordingly; coordinate breaks and lunches with appropriate individuals.
• Act as a resource for Surgical Services and Sterile Processing Departments for the procurement of necessary items for surgical procedures.
• Communicate and coordinate with materials management regarding supply utilization and deployment.

Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program or equivalent military surgical technologist program.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
