Job Description
The Laboratory Technologist (MLT or MT) works under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager and is responsible for performing laboratory tests and accurately reporting results to the physician for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases. The technologist also assists in the general operation of the laboratory, quality assurance programs, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory tests in hematology, immunohematology, immunology, bacteriology, microscopy, routine chemistry, and therapeutic drug monitoring.
- Conduct phlebotomies, including arterial puncture, capillary punctures, and venipunctures with age-specific considerations.
- Process specimens and validate results accurately and promptly.
- Calibrate, standardize, and maintain laboratory instruments following established protocols.
- Perform quality control and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment.
- Assist in maintaining laboratory policy and procedural manuals.
- Orient and teach students and new employees as needed.
- Follow established safety practices to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Promote effective working relationships within the team and facilitate departmental objectives.
- Attend in-service education as required by hospital policies and national credentialing agency requirements.
Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or a related specialty.
- Certification/registration or eligibility for certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician.
- Knowledge of medical technology principles, methods, materials, equipment, and techniques.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
