This position requires 40 hours per week across clinic hours, which are Monday to Friday, 7:45 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Job Description
The Optometry Assistant position supports eye care services to patients of all ages. As an essential team member, you will develop skills related to optical and imaging duties through on-the-job and self-training modules. The role demands customer service excellence, keen attention to detail, clear communication, and timely documentation.
This is a career ladder position with four levels that provide progressively more technical and independent work experiences. Promotion between job levels is based on performance, skill acquisition, required certifications, and the demonstrated ability to handle duties requiring increasing responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Room and screen patients for providers and perform optical and point of care lab testing.
- Document patient information accurately and in a timely manner.
- Assist patients with optical orders, including verifying benefits, frame selection, measurements, order entry, payment collection, dispensing, adjustments, and repairs.
- Manage inventory by ordering, cleaning, returning, and placing frames.
- Acquire ocular imaging such as photos, OCT, visual fields, and topography, and enter images into medical records for provider review.
- Assist with triage, tracking, and scheduling of referred, recalled, or diabetic patients.
- Handle phone inquiries and direct or answer patient questions and paperwork.
- Collaborate with Referral Care Coordinators and other providers to facilitate patient referrals.
- Order and maintain office and medical supplies.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and strive to meet patient and organizational goals.
Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
- High School Diploma or GED.
- National Medical Assistant certification required.
- One year of medical assistant experience preferred.
- BLS certification required.
- Flu vaccine required.
