Job Description
The Respiratory Therapist provides quality patient care, delivering intensive respiratory care and patient transport as medically prescribed, within the scope of their professional license and with minimal supervision. Responsibilities include evaluating patients, recommending treatment plans, and explaining treatment procedures and equipment to patients. The therapist conducts physician-prescribed treatments using ventilatory equipment, oxygen and aerosol devices, and nebulizers, ensuring proper medication administration, humidification, ventilation, and oxygenation.
Responsibilities
- Perform chest physiotherapy to promote secretion clearance.
- Conduct suctioning by various methods (oropharyngeal, nasal, and tracheal).
- Monitor oximetry and capnography according to policy.
- Review patient's chest x-rays to determine further evaluation needs.
- Perform 12-Lead EKG and basic arrhythmia recognition.
- Conduct pulmonary function studies and assist with respiratory care procedures (e.g., bronchoscopy, chest tube placement).
- Ensure adequate drainage of the chest via PleurX catheter where applicable.
- Administer tracheostomy care, including tube insertion and removal.
- Perform arterial puncture and report test results efficiently.
- Follow laboratory testing policies, including specimen handling and quality controls.
- Execute cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to BLS and ACLS guidelines.
- Set up and maintain mechanical ventilation, including equipment monitoring and preventive maintenance.
- Document treatments and patient responses accurately in respiratory care records.
- Communicate effectively with attending and pulmonary physicians regarding therapy efficiency.
- Maintain proper respiratory therapy charging and data entry.
Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
Current Respiratory Therapist licensure and relevant certifications are required. Experience with various respiratory care equipment and protocols is essential.
