Registered Nurse - Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
Job Description
The Registered Nurse for the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is responsible for delivering professional nursing care during the Post Anesthesia Phase I and Phase II. This role involves supporting patients as they transition from an anesthetized state to a less acute condition, ensuring optimal outcomes through thorough assessments, care planning, implementation of nursing interventions, and ongoing evaluation.
Responsibilities
- Conduct initial assessments of patients’ conditions and prioritize care based on evaluations and medical histories.
- Develop and coordinate patient care plans according to ongoing assessments and knowledge of post-anesthesia procedures.
- Initiate appropriate nursing interventions, maintain patient airways, and optimize oxygen saturation.
- Utilize pain management modalities to enhance patient comfort post-surgery.
- Effectively communicate with patients, families, and healthcare teams regarding care and processes.
- Ensure readiness of emergency care supplies and equipment for patient needs.
- Continuously evaluate patient progress toward PACU discharge guidelines and revise care plans as necessary.
- Provide comprehensive post-operative reports to receiving nursing staff and facilitate safe patient transportation.
- Maintain and enhance knowledge and competencies in Post-Anesthesia Nursing, including completion of unit competencies.
Schedule
This position includes a flexible schedule with options for 2 - hr shifts and 2 - 12 hr shifts, or 3 - 12 hr shifts, totaling 36-40 hours per week and includes a call component.
Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
- Completion of an accredited registered nurse program.
- Previous experience in PACU or Critical Care preferred.
- Current Pennsylvania RN licensure.
- American Heart Association's Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, renewed every two years.
- American Heart Association's Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, renewed every two years.
- American Heart Association's Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, renewed every two years.
