Job Description
The Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of blood specimens and other laboratory specimens while ensuring accurate and efficient procedures are followed. This role requires strong communication and organizational skills to interact with patients, medical staff, and laboratory personnel effectively.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood collection using venipuncture, arterial puncture, and capillary puncture techniques.
- Verify patient identification prior to specimen collection to ensure accuracy.
- Respond promptly to requests for specimen collection and communicate any delays effectively.
- Conduct bedside glucose testing and adhere to quality control standards.
- Prepare specimens for processing and ensure accurate labeling and documentation.
- Instruct and assist patients with various specimen collections as needed.
- Maintain organization of work area and laboratory supplies.
- Comply with safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures.
- Assist with the distribution of reports and glassware washing as required.
- Maintain current knowledge of laboratory policies and performance standards.
Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
- High school graduate or equivalent, with a certified Phlebotomy program completion preferred.
- Experience in a hospital laboratory setting as a phlebotomist is preferred.
- Certification as a Phlebotomist from ASCP, AMT, CLSI, or equivalent.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification as per American Heart Association standards.
