Certified Surgical First Assistant
Schedule
This position operates on a 12-hour day schedule, with shifts from 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM. Additionally, there is a requirement for 1-2 nights of call per week and every 4th weekend.
Job Description
The Certified Surgical First Assistant prepares the surgical suite for procedures by assisting the surgical technologist and registered nurse in gathering necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies. This role ensures that all supplies and equipment are available and in working condition. The assistant aids the surgeon in patient care during surgery by providing exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that enhance the safety and efficacy of the operation.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy and physiology, and operative techniques pertaining to specific procedures.
- Ensure all necessary supplies, equipment, or instruments are opened and available, confirming item charges with the nurse and surgical technologist.
- Assist the physician with proper positioning, draping, retracting, suctioning, sponging, tissue handling, cautery techniques, and suturing.
- Support team members in the transportation, positioning, and overall care of patients.
Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) is required.
- Active certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) is required.
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification is required.
- Supervisory reference forms completed within the last two years are necessary.
