Certified Surgical First Assistant

Job Description

This is a 13-week contract position. The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) prepares the surgical suite for procedures by working alongside the surgical technologist and registered nurse. Responsibilities include gathering necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies to ensure the suite is fully equipped and functional for surgeries.

The CSFA assists the surgeon with patient care in the operating room, providing critical support such as exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions to ensure safe and effective operations. Essential tasks include proper draping, retracting, suctioning, sponging, suturing, tissue handling, and applying specific dressing materials.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques related to specific procedures.
• Ensures all necessary supplies, equipment, or instruments are prepared and charged appropriately by confirming with the nurse and surgical technologist.
• Assists the physician as directed with proper positioning, draping, retracting, suctioning, sponging, tissue handling, cautery techniques, stapling devices, and suturing.
• Assists team members in the transportation, positioning, and total care of patients.

Schedule

This position requires a shift from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM with on-call responsibilities of 1-2 nights per week and one weekend every four weeks.

Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure

• 2+ years of experience as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) - required
• Active certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) - required
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification - required
• Submission of two supervisory reference forms completed within the last two years - required
• Skills checklist pertinent to the specialty (Certified Surgical First Assistant) updated within the last year - required
