Medical Laboratory Scientist - Blood Banking

Job Description

This position involves performing all routine and complicated laboratory procedures, including specimen processing, testing of patient specimens, calculating and reporting results, and ensuring adherence to quality control protocols. The candidate will operate and maintain laboratory instruments, assist with the development of new procedures, and may perform phlebotomy as needed.

Responsibilities

• Perform all routine and complicated laboratory procedures specific to assigned areas.
• Manage and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and equipment; make minor repairs as needed.
• Follow the laboratory's quality control program strictly.
• Calculate, enter, and verify results of laboratory procedures.
• Notify and document critical laboratory values obtained.
• Process patient specimens with attention to pediatric volume requirements where applicable.
• Participate in evaluating, developing, and implementing new or updated testing procedures.
• Demonstrate competence in performing patient care responsibilities considering population-specific needs.
• Complete compliance and regulatory tasks as per policies and procedures.

Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure

• Bachelor's Degree or higher in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or equivalent training meeting CLIA requirements.
• No experience required for graduates of approved clinical laboratory training programs; one year of approved clinical laboratory experience preferred.
• Certification for MT, MLS, CLS, or MLT from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS is required.
• New Graduates must be Board Certified or eligible, completing certification within one year of hire (Louisiana excluded).
