Mammography Technologist

Job Description

The Mammography Technologist administers ionizing radiation when performing screening and/or diagnostic mammograms according to established protocols. This role encompasses a thorough understanding of breast anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology as they relate to the procedure. The technologist maintains a high degree of accuracy in breast positioning, exposure techniques, and subsequent evaluation of imaging parameters to optimize patient imaging and care while adhering to radiation protection and safety standards.

The Mammography Technologist integrates technical skills, patient interaction, and care to obtain viable diagnostic information as ordered by the physician. Utilizing independent professional judgment and critical thinking, the technologist ensures that the resultant diagnostic information is obtained when possible and seeks direction from a MQSA qualified interpreting physician or lawful institutional policies to continue or discontinue the exam. Sensitivity to the physical, cultural, and emotional needs of the patient is emphasized through good communication, patient assessment, monitoring, and care skills in a non-judgmental and nondiscriminatory manner.

The role also includes participation in quality improvement processes and the continual assessment of professional performance, with an understanding of relevant state and federal regulations as well as knowledge of quality control and quality assurance requirements for mammography.

Responsibilities

• Administer ionizing radiation in accordance with established protocols.
• Demonstrate understanding of breast anatomy and medical terminology relevant to mammography.
• Ensure accurate breast positioning and exposure techniques for optimal imaging.
• Utilize critical thinking to make independent decisions regarding diagnostic procedures.
• Communicate effectively with patients, addressing their physical, cultural, and emotional needs.
• Participate in quality improvement processes and assess professional performance regularly.
• Comply with state and federal regulations, quality control, and assurance requirements.

Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure

• High School Diploma or Equivalent Required
• General and Relevant Experience Required
• Basic Life Support certification required
• Registered Technologist (R) or Registered Technologist (R) (M) required
