#ARMSTraveler Story

In the world of healthcare, the journey to finding one’s calling can take unexpected turns. For Brittany, a seasoned nurse whose story embodies resilience, the path to becoming a travel nurse specializing in the operating room was anything but conventional.

With a career that traversed military service and the unexpected twists of life, Brittany reflects on the winding road that led her to where she is today. Recounting her journey, she shares, “Nursing was my second career. I was actually in the Army, and I did that fresh out of high school and it had nothing to do with the medical field.”

Her journey into nursing began with uncertainty, as she found herself at a crossroads after the birth of her son. Initially pursuing a degree in anthropology, she found herself drawn to the allure of the medical field after exploring options as a medical assistant. Despite initial nerves, her journey into healthcare proved to be transformative. “I absolutely loved it,” she recalls, reflecting on her early experiences in the field.

Driven by a desire for growth, Brittany embarked on the challenging path to becoming a registered nurse. “As an R.N., you can go so many different routes,” she reflects, highlighting the myriad possibilities within the nursing profession. Yet, it was the operating room, a realm she had not initially considered, that captured her interest.

“Going through my whole program, I realized, hey, I can work in surgery,” she shares. Despite initial reservations, Brittany found herself drawn to the fast-paced environment and the opportunity to make a difference in patients’ lives.

Taking the Leap into Travel Healthcare

Transitioning into travel nursing was a decision fueled by a quest for flexibility and growth. “I like not being tied down to just having one hospital, one strict schedule,” she explains, underscoring the allure of travel nursing. For her, the ability to explore new places in diverse healthcare settings was both liberating and enriching. “It was the flexibility. So I was I think that was what attracted me the most.”

This was the turning point in Brittany’s travel career. “That’s when I was like, you know what? I’m going to go. I’m going to try it. And landing my first assignment was a little hard, but Zee [Brittany’s Recruiter] helped me with everything and she got me my first assignment.” She recounted. “And the flexibility of this travel assignment was amazing.”

Being a part of the ARMS family

Central to her role in the operating room is her commitment to patient care and advocacy. In a setting where stress and uncertainty abound, she strives to ease patients’ anxieties and foster a sense of comfort and reassurance. “I’m like a huge patient advocate for making sure they’re not afraid,” she emphasizes, reflecting on the importance of empathy and compassion in healthcare.

In the midst of bustling operating rooms and high-stakes procedures, Brittany remains a steadfast presence, ensuring that patients feel supported and informed every step of the way. “I introduce the patient to everybody by name,” she explains, highlighting her efforts to humanize the healthcare experience and alleviate fears.

Navigating the complexities of the operating room requires more than just technical skill—it demands empathy, communication, and a deep commitment to patient well-being. As she reflects on her journey, she acknowledges the challenges and rewards that come with her chosen path. “It’s so hard to tell within the operating room because I feel like they might have a split second,” she muses, acknowledging the transient nature of her interactions with patients.

Yet, it is in these fleeting moments that Brittany finds purpose and fulfillment, knowing that her presence makes a difference. As she continues to embark on new adventures as a travel nurse, she remains dedicated to providing compassionate care and shaping positive experiences for her patients, one operating room at a time.
